Join Red King Chess in dlr LexIcon for workshops this July.

(Suitable for ages 7-14 yrs)

Workshop One: Pawn to King 

Tues 21 July, 2.30-5.30pm 

In this first session we will learn the rules for all the pieces on the chess board. By the end of Day One you will know how to play with the Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, King and Queen. 

Workshop Two: Checkmate!

Wed 22 July, 2.30-5.30pm 

During this session we will study check and checkmate, some tricks and tactics, and we will learn how to use the Chess Clock! By the end of Day Two you will be able to play a full game of chess. 

*Please note that participants must be available to attend both workshops: Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July, 2.30-5.30pm

Registration for the Chess Tournament is separate, and is only suitable for people who have attended the first two sessions or those who already know how to play a full game of chess. 

Practice speaking Irish in a relaxed art filled workshop.

This workshop focuses on some fun ways to use watercolour. Through Irish we will learn some simple techniques which can be used to make an abstract piece or paint some simple flowers.

This adult event is aimed at learners of Irish at all levels. Through some fun facilitated art activities as well as some free speaking time all participants are encouraged to learn and share Irish together. Most importantly the focus of the workshop is speaking practice. Helpful conversation phrases will be on the tables.

No art background necessary.
All materials provided.

To join in the Artist Trading Cards fun in Dalkey Library you can create any number of artworks, at home, on 6.3cm x 8.9cm sized card relating to the theme "Windows".

You can then start to build your own collection of cards by bringing the cards you created to the meet up and swap them with other members of the group at a social event.

The theme for July is "Windows" and at this meeting we will select the theme for the following month.

Join us with your toddler to meet other children and their guardians to socialise and connect with others in the library setting. Music or storytime will be scheduled from time to time at the Toddler meetup, otherwise it is a free play session as led by the children!

Join us at Dalkey Library for our Lego Challenge Club - a fun, creative session where imagination takes the lead! Explore and free‑play with our huge Lego collection and see what amazing creations you can build.

Join Library staff on Mondays, upstairs in the Junior Library for stories with library staff, then some free time to play with toys in Dundrum Library.

12.30pm-1.00pm: Stories, songs and rhymes

1.00pm-2.00pm: Free play

Places are limited, so be sure to book online!

Please book for each child, there is no need to book for accompanying adults. Strictly one adult accompanying each child only.

Join us with your baby to meet other children and their guardians to socialise and connect with others in the library setting. Storytime will be scheduled from time to time at the baby meetup, otherwise it is a mingle session and a chance to meet and chat with others and their babies!

Join Anyone 4 Science to learn about Magnets and Magnetism and make a “magic wand" at this Summer Stars library event.

For ages 8yrs +

Practice speaking Irish in a relaxed art filled workshop.

We will use Geli plates to make fun abstract prints that are vibrant and full of colour. Through Irish I will introduce you to all the materials involved in Geli plate printing. We will use water based paint but it can get messy so dress for a mess!

Get Creative! An Interactive Writing Workshop for Children with Award-Winning Children’s Author, Sarah Webb

For ages 10-12yrs

If your child likes creating characters and settings and coming up with original ideas, they will love this fun interactive workshop with Sarah Webb. During the workshop, the young writers will dream up their own bookshop, café or hang out space and write a story, poem or comic strip about it. Will it be a bookshop run by cats, or a climbing wall with its own donut café? They will decide!

Sarah Webb is an award-winning Irish children’s author, creative writing teacher and Events Manager at Halfway up the Stairs children’s bookshop, Greystones. Her books include Blazing a Trail: Irish Women who Changed the World (illustrated by Lauren O’Neill) and The Weather Girls, which was inspired by real WW2 events in Ireland. Her new children’s book, The Bookshop Sisters, set in Dublin in 1956 was published in May by The O’Brien Press.
